The West Coast Hockey Prep Camp is not only an exceptional life experience for hockey players, it is also proud to serve as a premier hockey officials experience. The Officials Development Camp at West Coast Hockey Prep Camp is one of a kind for hockey officials. Referee’s and Linesperson’s get the opportunity to learn and practice alongside each other for 5 days in an immersive hockey officiating specific camp. In addition to the incredible training and education that takes place, there is also the opportunity to network and foster relationships with a large group of experienced officials from around the globe.

To get a better sense for what to expect from the Officials Development Camp we asked 3 individuals who could draw from personal experience to provide some insight. Brad Lazarowich, Logan Parsons and Kylian Martin.

Brad Lazarowich is the Lead Coach and Director of the Officials Development Camp. Brad is a former NHL Official with over 2000 NHL games worked including 3 Stanley Cup Finals. Brad is also the Vice-President Of Hockey Operations for the BCHL.

Logan Parsons is a 4 time camp attendee as an official and now will be in his third year of coaching at camp. Logan is currently working as an official with the AHL.

Kylian Martin is originally from France and this will be his 3rd year coming to camp, having worked for 2 as a member of our team. Kylian has refereed at the junior and professional ranks in both Quebec and in Europe.

What should people not familiar with the Officials Development Camp know about it? What can they expect?

Logan: Busy 5 days of instruction and hockey. Limited down time and lots of activity!

Brad: It’s a one of a kind experience. We have a great facility that we get to skate in, the use of a Jr A dressing room, and a group of staff members committed to providing excellent instruction.

Kylian: Team building is huge in our officiating camp, we get to experience the life of a high level team with a pro dressing room, great coaching staff, ice time in the morning before our games in the afternoon. When you’re an official you don’t experience these kind of things anymore, and here you can expect to improve your game, make some friends and a better network, while having a lot of fun!

What is it that makes Officials Development Camp so special in your opinion? What is it about the camp that makes you want to attend each summer?

Logan: Great location, great environment and excellent coaching.

Brad: It’s an opportunity to meet officials from different officiating background and to test your skills in an environment that is challenging.

Kylian: There is nothing like it, I talked about the environment, but having a coaching staff like this is not comparable. Brad is an amazing mentor and it’s a privilege to work with him, Logan and Graedy. He helped both of them get to such high levels and they both went through camp. I think it says it all.

What makes the West Coast Hockey Prep Camp Officials Development Camp different and/or more intriguing than other camps for hockey officials out there?

Logan: Its located is on the beautiful west coast of Vancouver Island. It is also more than just an on-ice officials camp with opportunities away from the rink for different activities.

Brad: There aren’t many camps like this one. When you look at wanting to improve your officiating skills this camp checks all the boxes. Knowing that everyone attending is looking for the same experience makes the days a lot of fun.

Kylian: You don’t find that many officiating camps out there. It’s not a simple exposure camp, people will care for you and your development. You’ll make some good friends in a very special environment.

What is your personal favourite part of camp? Personal favourite memory from attending camp?

Logan: The team environment and atmosphere is my personal favourite part of the camp.

Brad: I enjoy working with all of the officials in camp and being apart of their summer in a positive way.

Kylian: My favourite part of camp is always the morning games we do between us. It’s such a bonding moment, and you can feel and see in these moments that referees are just so passionate about the sport. You can also see why several of us stopped playing and became referees … 😅

Why should anyone involved in hockey, not just officials, attend West Coast Hockey Prep Camp?

Logan: The camp’s location is spectacular and the facilities are exceptional.

Brad: It’s a first class camp put on by people who care about the game of hockey and who are giving back by sharing their experiences. This camp should be something you want to attend to improve in whatever part of the game you participate in.

Kylian: If you’re involved in hockey, you probably love your sport like everyone attending. And here you have the opportunity to have a great time, making some friends, become a better hockey player, and all of it in a unique environment. It’s not about what you can get out of prep camp that matters, it’s what prep camp can get out of you. Every camp is a lifetime memory.
