My Conversation with Matt Pettinger, NHL Veteran

With so much uncertainty in the world right now, and less hockey to report on, we are giving focus to our unique network of amazing hockey people.

We have extensive reach in the professional hockey community around the world, and we want to share that reach with you. We hope you find our articles to be released over the course of the year informative, insightful, and inspiring. The following interview with my long time friend and former Victoria Salsa teammate Matt Pettinger is part of my ongoing project to support professional athletes in their transition to life after sport. Enjoy.

My Career Transition Questions to NHL Veteran Matt Pettinger

While You Were Playing…

  • 0:52 – When did you start making plans to transition out of professional hockey?
  • 2:00 – Did you start planning before you were done player, or after your final season?
  • 4:00 – You did a 1 year online commercial real estate program. What can you tell other athletes about that program?
  • 5:53 – Were other athletes in the dressing room supportive of your continued studies you worked on during the season?
  • 7:41 – When you were making a very good living, more than most people in society, but you knew it was just a stage in your life, that you would one day need to move on, what was that like?

Looking Back Now…

  • 9:00 – Looking back now, with a family and young kids. A new career. What would you say to a young player in the National Hockey League now, even one making a lot of money, about how much time they may still have ahead of them, no matter how much money they make? Has your new career given you new purpose and drive to get up in the morning and get after it everyday?
  • 11:00 – I use the analogy all the time, watching young guys get drafted and buying depreciating assets instead of appreciating assets. That is the ego and the thrill, buying a truck instead of real estate to pull up in a buddy’s driveway in a shiny truck. Are you saying a few more appreciating assets at 20 would be serving you well right now?

What Advantage Does Your Professional Hockey Experience Give You?

  • 11:53 – What advantage has your experience as an NHL player given you now in commission based commercial real estate?
  • 13:50 – You were involved in the now famous Bear Mountain Resort development in Victoria with many other NHL players. What did you learn through that experience?
  • 15:25 – As an NHL player did you feel like you were a target for risky investment proposals?
  • 16:35 – I’m hearing that you have been surrounded by educated people with their heads on their shoulders. What do you say to a young athlete that doesn’t have that support system?
  • 18:00 – I want to use this platform to help athletes propel their own businesses and careers. How can people interested in doing business with you find you online?

Answer – www.devencorevictoria.com. If you have commercial real estate needs in Victoria, Matt would be happy to hear from you.
