The WHL and its scouts are in a state of flux, uncertainty, and challenge during this pandemic. That’s a given.  In this interview, Swift Current Broncos Scout and Prep Camp Director Kerry Gladson discusses the challenges and opportunities the pandemic has created for Western Hockey League Scouts. To the athletes striving to reach their dream of playing in the WHL, Kerry shares insights, opportunities, and the simple truth about what Swift Current scouts, other teams, and the league are doing now to prepare for the incoming classes of players.

WHL Scout Kerry Gladson and Nate Leslie Discuss:

  • 2006 Players – The delay of the May 2021 draft to December 22.
  • 2007 Players – This year is already on the radar as their draft will happen 6 months after the 2006 draft.
  • 2005 Players – In a normal year these players would have attended their first training camp.
  • Undrafted Players – Teams are very aware of top undrafted talent (you wouldn’t believe the examples Kerry gives of undrafted (WHL) players who went on to be NHL legends.
  • The Western Hockey League Draft – Why WHL Scouts watches such young players.
  • What Scouts Look For – Ever wonder if scouts see you pout on the bench, have a lazy warmup, or shake your head at a teammate or referee? They do. They also saw the time you sacrificed your body for the team, gave your goalie a tap on the pads, and battled hard even though you were down by 8 goals.

Scouts at Prep Camp

WHL scouts are keen to get out and watch top talent in British Columbia. Pandemic restrictions permitting, we’re creating a camp strategy that will help WHL and Junior Hockey scouts evaluate the great talent the West Coast Hockey Prep Camp has to offer. More than any other summer, we’ll be connecting with as many scouts operating in British Columbia and encouraging them to scout talent at camp. Keep in mind, every WHL team has a scouting presence inside BC.
