This weekend, Prep Camp is sponsoring the Nanaimo MHA U15 Winter Tournament. We are proud to support local minor hockey associations and it is a chance to connect with hockey families that might want to join us in Port Alberni this summer. It got us excited about this years Elite Male Camps taking place July 25 – 29 and August 1 – 5. It also made us pause to look around at some of the recent success stories from our network of Prep Camp Alumni.

WHL Draft Success

The Western Hockey League Draft was held on December 9th. While getting drafted does not guarantee success at the next level, it is a huge accomplishment and recognition of being among the most sought after 2006 born talent in western Canada. The WHL Draft is an event circled in the calendars of many hockey players aspiring to play at the highest level of junior hockey. Among those drafted were some recent Prep Camp attendees including: Tomas Mrsic and Diego Buttazzoni selected by the Medicine Hat Tigers; Hiroki Gojsic and Brendon Hall selected by the Victoria Royals; Michael Gallant and EJ Emery selected by the Saskatoon Blades; Cohen Massey selected by the Portland Winterhawks; and Chase Valliant selected by the Calgary Hitmen.

Congratulations to all those selected in this years draft. Keep working hard in the pursuit of your goals, and we hope to see many of you again in 2022.

Prep Campers Lift Blazers to the Top of CHL Rankings

The Kamloops Blazers have been on fire this season. So much so that they have sat near the very top of the weekly CHL Rankings all season. Looking at their roster, we can’t help but feel proud when we see Prep Camp alumni playing key roles on this team. Led by Associate Coach and Prep Camp Coach (confirmed for 2022), Mark Holick, the team has 5 players that have spent various summers in Port Alberni. This includes the teams top two leading scorers, captain Logan Stankoven and Matthew Seminoff; NHL drafted Caedan Bankier; second year centre Connor Levis and shutdown defenseman Ethan Brandwood.

The WHL is stacked with highly competitive teams this year, with many also being fixtures in the CHL top-10 Rankings. We would like send our best wishes to the Kamloops Blazers and all Prep Camp alumni around the WHL as they battle for their chance to compete in this years Memorial Cup.

Stankoven to Represent Canada at WJC

Team Canada has announced their roster for the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship being held in Red Deer and Edmonton December 17 –  January 6. This tournament is a favourite of any hockey loving Canadian over the Holiday season, and this year, we have one more reason to cheer on Canada as they go for gold. Amongst the talented crop of players selected from all over Canada is Prep Camp alumni, Logan Stankoven. His high energy and hard working game will be extremely valuable in a tournament that brings together the best U20 players from around the world.

Logan spent two summers training in Port Alberni, and he was kind enough to share this message ahead of camp this past summer. His message of not taking any opportunities for granted and working everyday to be the best person you can be on and off the ice was incredibly inspirational. We cannot wait to see him wearing the maple leaf and cheering him and the rest of Team Canada on.
