It is with great pride that I announce today, Alvin Dow, from Harlem, New York will attend the West Coast Hockey Prep Camp during Goalie Week 4, August 5-10. Through a long string of small world coincidences and hockey networks, my coaching roots from time spent coaching in New York City (2005-2008) has landed us an incredibly talented and gifted young goaltender in Alvin Dow. This 1997 born Midget goalie has recently led his team to the New York City Skyliners’ first State Championship appearance in it’s young 3 year history. The Skyliners play at the City Ice Pavilion, a rink literally built on top of a warehouse in Queens, New York, a short drive over the 59th Street Bridge from Manhattan. Previous to moving back to Vancouver in 2008 I had been in talks with owner Erik Ekstein to become their Hockey Director. 5 years later we announce that the first Junior A prospect to come out of the Skyliners organization will join us at camp this summer.
Coach, and Vancouver Native, Paul Durante admits, “Alvin’s success has been a result of a great attitude, relentless work ethic, an extremely supportive mother, and a great network of coaches and mentors in his school, and in his previous minor hockey association, Ice Hockey In Harlem. Alvin is big, strong, committed, and has a 3.8 GPA. He deserves a chance to play Junior Hockey. We are absolutely thrilled that he and my son Tyson will be joining you at the West Coast Hockey Prep Camp this summer.” During my own time in Manhattan I was fortunate to have the opportunity to act as Coaching Director at Riverbank State Park on 145th Street in Harlem. Alvin has grown up playing on Manhattan/Harlem’s outdoor rinks at Riverbank and Lasker Rink in Central Park where ice only holds 4 months a year. He’s had to drag equipment bags on the packed subway cars, and stayed focused in a fringe sport (compared to other popular NYC/American sports like basketball and baseball) in an area of the city not known for pumping out top level hockey players. We are honoured to welcome this exceptional young man to the West Coast Hockey Prep Camp.
